The subject of this week’s post is a little misleading. It’s nothing to do with the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, or even as the picture to the left may suggest, Marvin. He’s just there to help sell the misdirect.
No, it’s just more a way of pointing out how life, the universe and everything can find almost limitless ways to divert me from my task at hand, namely writing my next book. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the diversions, they’re just make me less productive.
BUT! I’m now on holidays until the end of the month so I can start to rectify that. I mentioned in my post last week how I’d had an idea for an FTW sequel, but was torn between continuing work on my WIP or starting that.
Well, I chose my current WIP (The Obsidian Witch). For about 5 minutes. Then I had an idea I really wanted to write down for the FTW sequel so I didn’t forget it.
1000 words later and I had pushed aside my WIP, fully distracted by this shiny new distraction.
Since then I’ve added another 1500 words or so, so it’s still in its infancy. I’ve got it all plotted out like I want it though, so now it’s a matter or filling in the blanks.
With that in mind that’s all for this week’s post. I really should get back to writing. I’ve spent all morning gardening and potting plants (aka diversions), so I should try to add a few words to the draft.
Over the weekend I had a bit of brainwave about a plot for a new story. I had been looking at some rough outlines I’d already had when inspiration struck for this new idea.
I quickly jotted down the outline for a heap of the plot, and since then I’ve roughed it out further into the first stages of development. When I start a story, I like to put everything into a mind-mapping program so I can visualise Read the rest of this entry »
This week I’m taking a little downtime between publishing FTW and fleshing out the idea for my next. I’ve found myself wanting to get back to reading things other than my own drafts for the nth time, so I’ve dived back into my Kindle with gusto.
You may have noticed I’ve been posting reviews of books as I’ve finished reading them. That’s something I’m doing to not only give my site a little more content, but also Read the rest of this entry »
This amused me no end this week. I received some old school spam by post the other day.
An actual, proper letter in my mailbox sent to me all the way from France. It made me think… I can’t help but think how lucrative of an industry this must be that these phishers can afford to send out mail by international post. Especially given Read the rest of this entry »
My work in progress is going well since I first wrote about it last week. It’s now sitting at a little over 11,000 words with still some more to go.
Interestingly, I’ve written the beginning and part of the middle, but last time I sat down to write I skipped ahead and wrote the end. That isn’t something I normally do, but I knew exactly how I wanted to write it, plus I wanted a break from the part I was currently writing. Next thing I knew Read the rest of this entry »
The red ink of editing isn’t even dry on my soon to be released novel FTW and I’m busily working on my next. Between catching up on my reading and waiting for my draft to come back from my beta reader I’ve been massaging a few story ideas into shape.
The one I’m most keen on came from an idea I had for a title Read the rest of this entry »
Right now I’m deep in the throes of editing FTW. I’m currently sitting on step 5 in the list below, so my part involves a lot of waiting around so it’s really not that bad. I have to self-edit everything I write, so the more ways I can add in to check what I’ve written, the more chances I’ve got to find problems.
My process of editing has evolved over time, and now looks something like this: Read the rest of this entry »
For the past couple of weeks I’ve been thrashing out ideas for the second part of my as-yet unreleased novella FTW. I’ve held off giving part one to my beta reader until I get a better idea of how part two is developing.
I didn’t originally intend on writing a second part so before I go too far down the publishing path I need to make sure my ideas for the second will gel with what I’ve written for the first.
I’ve thrown down a few thousand words already and so far it’s progressing nicely. It begins Read the rest of this entry »
Why do people wish for immortality? I don’t know about others, but for me I blame science fiction.
Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and the list goes on. All of those are to blame. I’d love to see the universe and hope like hell it’s like something the crazy free-wheeling type of place we’ve imagined it to be.
I can sit and stare at a full moon and feel despair because we’re not even close to a regular Joe (or Morgan for that matter) being able to visit the closest thing to us, and even if we were the travel time would invariably be in weeks. Read the rest of this entry »
I’ve had a lot of distractions over the last week. My eldest broke her elbow during the week which hasn’t left me with much time for anything. As such, this week’s blog will be short and probably a bit of everything.
One thing I have managed during the week (because I started this a few weeks ago) is the paperback release of Have Shovel – Will Bury. The proof copy arrived in the mail during the week and now I’ve reviewed it I’ve made it live on Amazon. Yay! Read the rest of this entry »
