Better Call Saul

Breaking Bad

I’ve been in a bit of a writing slump of late. Not writers block, just a general lack of interest in putting pen to paper (or more accurately fingers to keyboard). I can’t define a particular reason why, I think it may just be a number of factors leading me to not wanting to sit down and write.

So what have I been doing then? Well, since it’s summer here in Australia and the last 6 weeks have been school holidays, we’ve been spending a lot of time doing family stuff like going swimming and fun stuff like that. When I do get a few hours to myself I’ve been watching Breaking Bad. I’d wanted to watch this for years but never go around to it, so over the last few weeks I’ve watched a couple of episodes each night and watched the whole series.

I’d heard it was a good show, but I was unprepared for just how much of an understatement this was. I enjoyed the hell of this! The writers did an absolutely marvellous job of weaving intricate story lines through the series, and created a bunch of new favourite characters for me to root for, even if they were all villains.

It also gave me a spin off show to watch which I’m about a half-dozen episodes into – Better Call Saul. I loved his character in Breaking Bad and jumped at watching his spin off the day after I’d finished with Breaking Bad.

Better Call Saul is, so far, nothing like I was expecting. I guess I’d been expecting a character similar to Saul in Breaking Bad, but the writers made him much less of a crooked, double-dealing shyster.

Instead he’s a down-to-earth, hard-working guy just trying to make something of himself after leaving his questionable past in the past.

Set six years prior to the events of Breaking Bad, I can help but feel a little sad knowing that some series of events must occur that drive him to give up his honest ways, which I think makes me like him and the show even more.

Knowing what he will become, I can’t help but watch and see what happens next.
