Book Review | The Girl With All The Gifts by M.R. Carey
That said, I’ve now read “The Girl With All The Gifts” by M.R. Carey three times since I first bought it, and I love it just as much as I did the first time. It’s a unique take on the whole “Zombie Apocalypse” genre, one I was pleasantly surprised with. In his post-apocalyptic vision of the future Carey paints a story where humankind has been decimated by a fungus which has turned the bulk of the population into “hungries”… kind of dead person / fungus hybrids.
Let’s have a look at the blurb:
Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite. But they don’t laugh. Melanie is a very special girl.
How can it not suck you in? Before you even realise it you’re sympathising not only with the survivors but with the “hungries” as well. Some of them anyway. It’s worth a five star rating any day.
Best of all the book has been adapted into a movie and is due out this year. I’ve watched the preview and am itching to see it. Check out the trailer below.
