The Obsidian Witch

Posted on Updated on

tow_211Since last week I’ve been working steadily on my new work in progress, tentatively titled “The Obsidian Witch”. I’ve had to take a few days off from writing as I’ve been awfully sick from tonsillitis (for like the 3rd of 4th time this year mind you.)

That aside I’ve smashed out almost 7,000 words since last week which is a good start. I’ve been laying in a lot of scenes at the beginning and skipping parts that I haven’t yet fully thought through. So once I get back to those they should expand by another few thousand. I’m still only just getting started so at this early stage it’s looking like it might turn out to be another full-length novel, which is kind of how I was planning it from the beginning.

tow_211So the basic idea behind this one is the story follows a group of teenagers in a small farming town in Nebraska. There’s a local legend about a witch who returns every x years and turns people to stone. Of course nobody believes such nonsense until the witch suddenly returns and starts snatching people. It comes down to the teenagers to save the townsfolk from the witch and her evil plans. That’s about as much as I’ll say for now as I don’t want to give away too much of the plot just yet.

As you can see I’ve also been working on possible cover images for this one. This is one I’m happy with at the moment. The crow in the middle relates to an element of the story, and I’ve also tried to make it look as if it could also be a witch standing and facing you. Anyway, we’ll see. I’ve still got miles to go on this one so I might end up changing the whole thing before it gets published.

I’m trying to find a balance between my writing and getting through books I want to read. I’ve checked out a few websites on the subject of writing and one recommends even if you can’t sit down for massive blocks at a time, try to carve out smaller blocks. Like they say to find 8 to 10 minutes somewhere in your day. That makes the whole thing seem a lot less daunting, and that way if I can sneak say 10 minutes during my lunch break, and a little extra in the evenings I’ll still get through my writing while leaving enough time for reading as well.

Side note: check back later this week for a review of Syncing Forward. I’ve just finished reading this for the second time, just need to get around to writing my review.

In other news, I’ve received the draft copy of “Death is for Other People” back from my beta reader with a bunch of notes to read through. So at some point during this week I (hopefully) will find the time to mark up the final copy and get that one out into the world.

My most recent release – F T W – continues to sell well, three weeks in to its release. I’m seeing sales from various countries around the world as well as borrows on the Kindle Unlimited program (US and UK, where you can read it for free as part of your monthly subscription).

Borrows so far are outpacing sales, so it looks like Kindle Unlimited may be the way of the future. I’m still waiting for them to make it available in Australia as I’m keen to give it a go myself.
